As a global coffee capitol, it’s a wonder Seattle hasn’t shaken into the ocean from the collective caffeine tremors of its residents. The caffeinated reputation isn’t overblown, either—131 shops in Downtown alone make it nearly impossible to choose, especially when you widen the search to the many funky and diverse neighborhoods of the city. So to narrow the field, take a look through a zoom lens and check out these three great spots in Fremont.
Milstead & Co.
Steps away from the Fremont Bridge, Milstead & Co. makes a perfect meeting spot after a little troll spotting at the icon below the bridge. Offering artisan coffee at its finest, the shop brings in beans daily from near and far for a gourmet cup o’ joe. Eschewing decaf in favor of a full-bodied jolt, these guys have jettisoned caffeine-free from the menu entirely, so come prepared for the real deal.
Fremont Coffee Company
A homey atmosphere invites you to kick back in this java joint inside a two-story house filled with bright natural light that beams through picture windows and out on the deck when weather permits. Fair trade and organic beans dominate the menu, which are hand roasted on site and carefully brewed to perfection. Plus, you can’t beat the intricate themed foam art that ranges from Yoda to baseballs depending on the day.
The experts at Lighthouse Roasters have 20 years of experience under their belts as one of the city’s original cafes, truly able to say that they were talking beans and roasting methods in Seattle before it was cool. Small batch flavor comes through in each cup brewed from carefully-sourced coffee beans. If you find a blend you love, stock up in store or order by the pound from Lighthouse’s website.
