Baltimore’s Best Pit Beef

Don’t even think about going to Baltimore without trying pit beef. This meat is slow cooked over a charcoal fire to tender perfection, thinly sliced, and served up on a Kaiser roll. Now you’ll also find pit ham, pit turkey, and other “pit” meats on menus across Baltimore. This stuff is so good, it just might make you forget about heading any further south for great barbeque.

Pioneer Pit Beef has neither a website nor a phone number, so that should give you an idea of what kind of establishment it is. Fancy it is not, but they serve up some of the best pit beef around. Juicy and piled to the heavens, Pioneer Pit Beef’s sandwiches are a must-try.

You can find Pioneer Pit Beef at N Rolling Rd & Johnnycake Rd.

Chaps Pit Beef, a family-owned joint that’s been around since 1987, is a Baltimore institution. Their combo sandwiches include two types of whatever meats you’d like (beef and sausage) and are super affordable for the amount of food you get.

You can find Chaps Pit Beef at 5801 Pulaski Hwy.

The pit beef here is incredibly tender, with hints of deliciously smoky flavor. The ends are gorgeously charred with that perfect red center, and though there’s usually a line (it’s that good), it’s a nice chance to chat with some friendly locals!

You can find The Canopy at 9319 Baltimore National Pike.
